The Evolution Of Ganon

He’s one of gaming’s most recognizable characters and a fan-favorite foil, but how much do you really know about The Legend of Zelda’s iconic villain, Ganondorf? From a demonic pig monster to a powerful warlock, Ganon has undergone a surprising metamorphosis throughout his 26-year existence.

This isn't a complete list of every Zelda game featuring Ganon, but a look at how Ganon's backstory has evolved over time.

Legend of Zelda (1986)
In the original Zelda title, Ganon is a mysterious figure. He appears as a giant topaz pig monster who wields a trident. Ganon holds Princess Zelda hostage in his lair at Death Mountain, and the only weapon that will destroy him is a silver arrow.

In the instruction booklet for The Legend of Zelda, Ganon’s name was spelled with a single n. However, during the in-game intro his name is spelled “Gannon,” leading to decades of confusion.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991)
Nintendo started to flesh out Ganon’s backstory in A Link to the Past. It turns out that Ganon wasn’t always a boar-like demon, but had once been a man by the name of Ganondorf. Ganondorf was the leader of a group of thieves who found a way to enter the Sacred Realm and steal the Triforce. After Ganondorf rips the Triforce from its home, he plunges the Sacred Realm into darkness and begins his transformation into the vastly powerful being seen at the end of the game. The Knights of Hyrule and its Sages attempt to trap Ganon within the Sacred Realm, but Link eventually has to come and save the day.

Link’s battle with Ganon is reminiscent of the one at the end of the original Legend of Zelda, foreshadowing the reincarnation concept that would eventually be incorporated into the mythology in The Wind Waker.

Fun fact: A Link to the Past’s English instruction manual gave Ganon the surname Dragmire as well as an alias "Mandrag Ganon," which means "Ganon of the Enchanted Thieves.”

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
Nintendo dug into Ganondorf’s backstory further in the N64 title Ocarina of Time. It’s explained that Ganondorf’s group of thieves are actually a race of people called the Gerudo. Within Gerudo society, men are only born once every century, making the Gerudo a predominately female warrior race. According to Gerudo custom, Ganondorf is King of the Gerudo by birthright. Ganondorf uses this power and influence to obtain entrance into the Sacred Realm to steal the Triforce. During the Ocarina of Time “retelling” of the Legend of Zelda, however, Ganondorf is only able to steal a third of the Triforce – the Triforce of Power – which Ganon uses to conquer Hyrule and cast the realm into darkness.

Of course, Ganon reveals his Boar form late in the game.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003)
In The Wind Waker, players are given their first opportunity to sympathize with Ganondorf. It is revealed that Ganondorf's race hails from a land called the Gerudo Desert. This arid countryside is a wasteland of unstable climate that is plagued by sandstorms. The Gerudo have come to resent the inhabitants of the utopian Hyrule Field, which is why Ganondorf attempts to steal the Triforce.

The Wind Waker also introduces the concept that Ganon, Link, and Zelda are all reincarnated entities forced to relive their epic battle every few centuries. No direct timeline is given, but it is implied that this cycle has been repeating for millennia.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (2011)
Nintendo’s most recent Zelda title, Skyward Sword, added a few new twists to the Zelda mythos. Skyward Sword is a prequel of sorts for the franchise, and even though Ganon isn’t directly featured in the game, his origins are revealed. In the game, Ganon appears to be a manifestation of a demonic god called Demise. Link’s companion during Skyward Sword, Fi, describes Demise as "the source of all monsters." After Demise’s plan to obtain the Triforce is squelched, his hatred for Link and Zelda manifests as a curse that forces the trio and their descendants to eternally relive their conflict.

The Legend of Zelda mythos has evolved a great deal, and we wonder what new direction’s Nintendo will take the property in the future. One this is for sure: We’re happy to keep reliving these adventures.

  • Wasn't Ganon in Twilight Princess?

I mean, I'm certain that he was now that I think of it- it was one of the reasons why that game was a disappointment. They set up Zant to be a complete b adass - the Darth Vader of Hyrule. Heck, he leaves Link for DEAD when you complete the water temple and he blindsides you. But of course, with absolutely no good justification whatsoever, at the end of the game - spoiler alert - it turns out Zant is a sad skull kid-like puppet character being controlled by Ganon. Thus cheapening....well, everything that Zant had done up until that point. To cater to Ganon, who didn't need to be there at all.

No one tells stories like Nintendo! Durrr... *sigh*

Who shows up as a phantom. He's in the game in a flashback though, where the 7 Sages try to bound him to a rock and he escapes and murders them all.
  • One of my favorite villians ever.
  • Why are you missing Ganon from Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess?!!!
  • One of my favorite villians ever.
  • These Ganons make CD-i Ganon laugh! They make him break in half!
  • Ganon is great. So mysterious... and I first knew him as a human and whatever the hell his boar form was supposed to look like in Ocarina, so it's still kind of weird to see this sort of animalistic side... Haven't played SS yet, but I don't know about this god form. I kinda like the idea he was just some dude hungry for power, without too much context.
  • Easily one of the best video game villains ever.

  • he has some crazy hair going on in his OoT pic. just look at it... his eyebrows connect to his hair. quite possibly the most sinister facial hair ive ever seen. hitler's mustache pales in comparison.

  • I notice disturbing lack of CD-i Ganon in this list. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4h6i0AlxpAY
  • The Ultimate Evil. A great villain.
  • Ganondorf is so cool. I don't feel like Demise is all that cool though. I just wish they would move forward. Stop going back in time and just move forward. If you think about the confirmed timeline they have so much untapped stuff that it's not even funny.
  • Ganon is a interesting villian that always kept Link on his toes. He's cool and has changed alot over the years. I think that LINK needs a makeover. The green outfit has to go. In Twilight Princess, the gamer got a chance to make Link wear a cool gold and red outfit. Link oughta wear more colored clothing. The classic blue Zora and red Goron outfit isn't anything new or eye appealing.
  • You know what I realized after reflecting on Nintendo's franchises? They suck as story-tellers! Seriously, the only time I remotely cared about a character or a plot in a Nintendo game(and I've played 'em all) was Midna in Twilight Princess!
  • Urgh, you know when even a gaming website gets it wrong, you have to wonder what's the point. Wind Waker Gannon and Ocarina Gannon[and Link to the Past Gannon, for that matter] are the exact same person!
No reincarnation, that comes from Twilight Princess, [and it doesn't make sense because the game is suggested to take place while the first Gannon still exists], they should have just stuck with Zant imo.
Basically, Gannondorf managed to seperate himself from his monster form after Ocarina, and this is how he escaped the sacred realm, it's also why he lost his immortality giving Link the ability to kill him. [It's also why that's the one game he doesn't transform in]
The LTTP Gannon is the monster form that lived on in the sacred realm.
    And now you know.
Personally, I kind of hope Nintendo does a 3d remake of LTTP so the trilogy can be completed in epic fashion!
  • I find it interesting how Link is the only member of the trinity who's not a reincarnated deity. Ganon is Demise's hatred (I personally view that as meaning Ganon is his avatar) reincarnated. Zelda is the goddess Hylia reincarnated. And Link is just a normal boy who happened to be friends with Zelda and ended up with his soul getting caught in the endless fight between two Gods. Makes Link even more amazing and Ganon an even better antagonist, as every big bad in the series is him even if not in name.
  • Nice article. I am always very confused about the Zelda story, it is so complicated and there has been a lot of games. It's difficult to keep up with it all.

  • Ganon looked like a b.a.d.a.s.s in twilight princess,in fact I think it's the only zelda game in wich he looks genuinely evil and scary as hell...oh and Demise looks freaking awesome!!!(I haven't played SWS)
  • One of the biggest "Meh" villains of all time. The fact that Nintendo just reuses him in almost every game is the only reason he is recognized. He is a bland villain in a bland franchise (as far as story and characterizations go).
  • thanks for spoiling Skyward Sword
