GI Show 110: Diablo III, Max Payne 3, Minecraft

Two of the biggest releases of 2012 dropped this week. Listen in as we break down the latest from Blizzard and Rockstar, and stick around for Minecraft 360 impressions.

In the first segment, Adam Biessener and Matt Miller join host Matt Helgeson to discuss Diablo III's troubled launch and amazing gameplay. While our review hasn't posted yet, suffice it to say that the gang is pretty excited about this one. Next up is a discussion of Max Payne 3, the return of Rockstar's venerable noir shooter. Andy Reiner, Tim Turi, and Ben Reeves sing the praises of the game's expert storytelling and finely honed gunplay. Finally, as promised, reviewer Jeff Cork is back in the office so we break down last week's release of Minecraft on Xbox Live. Joe Juba, Dan Ryckert, and Jeff Marchiafava also drop by to give their impressions of the latest version of Mojang's phenomenon.

  • All the games being mentioned are pretty darn great for different reasons. It's been a good week. ^_^

  • diablo 3 BEST GAME since stalker and half life 2
  • Can't wait until my Diablo 3 copy gets here. I have heard a lot about the connection issues, which is very stupid for it to be online-only... when it is totally unneeded. Max Payne 3 really looks nice also, and I have MC on mah PC. Good week for all kinds of gamers! (Except the ones with bad internets...)
  • I've been playing Minecraft non-stop for a week and a day now, haven't I? e___e
  • this is what i want to do with my life. play games and then *** about them.

  • D3's online requirement is pretty annoying. I wouldn't normally have too much of a problem with it, but the server acting up makes it a lot worse.

  • I want an Xbox port of Diablo!

  • Just passed D3 today.

  • Great podcast! Blockbuster titles makes this an exciting time of year...

  • I like the online only aspect. It allows all character progress to be saved online, allowing you to switch between computers at any time with everything attached to your account rather than you hard drive. It also allows all character progress to be saved seamlessly as you play. Rather than autosaves and manual saving in single player RPGs. Like with MMOs, everything you do is permanent and unreversable. I think that's a good thing.
  • Should I play the first two Max Payne games before playing the third one?
  • The online-only thing is a little annoying, but in all honesty, I didn't even touch Diablo 2's offline portion. Once you play online for Diablo, there's no going back.

I REALLY want to play Max Payne 3, thank God my 21st birthday is coming up in a month!

And I got an early birthday gift in Minecraft on 360, and I love it. Who knew something so simple could be so incredibly addicting?

  • Yet another good show.

  • This was a great podcast guys. Keep up the good work.

  • Blizzard came under attack? what a joke. They just skimped out on server space to save a couple bucks. They have the same amount of server space at lauch as they will ever have for D3, but of course more ppl play immediately after launch.
  • What i want to know is, what compelled Blizzard to make it online only?. There are a few people out there that have slow connections, or no connection at all. Why?.
  • *sigh* Midnight launch delayed by 1:50... game, franchise and developer all deemed a failure? I really don't know what to say other than the sensationalist coverage of the delayed launch complete with lack of context (or mention of the resolve) and complete absence of understanding on how "preparing for launch" actually goes down... unbecoming conduct, to say the least.

At least you guys finally got into talking about the game, more than I can say about plenty of other reviewers and fellow gamers. So thanks for that, and actually getting into the nuances of the core of the game.

Solid coverage of Max Payne 3 as well, against with the finer details - highlighting the tech specifically.
  • I am enjoying Diablo III a lot. Some of the piddly time consuming crap (that used to plague diablo) has been swept into a tidy system. I don't have time to strategize on what I think MIGHT be the right path of skills to choose, just to find out I was wrong at level 90. I actually enjoy being able to pick and choose what skills to use without penalty later.

Some skills I gambled on in D2 only to find out I needed those precious points for the ones I REALLY wanted later. The D3 system, comparatively, may not be for the hardcore, but I'm happy.

That being said, I did enjoy my D2 werewolf build and I don't think that any animal build is possible in DIII.
